Moving Forward: Technoclass!

                            Moving Forward: Technoclass!

I have had the privilege of taking a course from an instructor, Nicole Zumpano of Dominican University who teaches Social Media Emerging Technologies. I did not know what to expect but I am walking away filled with a sense of gratitude and practical ways to engage my students. As early as this Friday, April 30, I will be doing a lesson plan I created for the class ( although modified to teach to students and not parents). My students will take a journey learning about their digital tattoo’s and hopefully, I will scare them into not posting anything detrimental to their future careers. The crux of this lesson plan will have students creating an action plan to make their social media accounts empowering and inviting to the world.

In the future, I want to create a class Tik tok page to feature the greatest debates in my class. My classes are often focused on profound ( this is the goal not often the reality) conversations regarding current events, profound discussions, and creating a positive atmosphere to express oneself. Over the course of Social Media Emerging Technologies, I have felt more confident to start a Tik tok account featuring the greatest debaters/statements of the week. Hopefully, students can rely on their class account for a positive, inspiring, and academically relevant experience within the context of social media. Oftentimes students' social media experiences consist of vanity, entertainment, and negative emotions ( as those emotions sell the most). A class page has the power to transform the experience of social media and bring inspiring class content on a public platform.

I also want to continue providing resources to my students about Big Tech, Big Data, and what they can do to protect themselves. First, I want to create a survey about social media's impact on their emotions as people. Then, I want to share the documentary, The Social Dilemma. Then we can talk as a class experiment together and agree to stay off social media for two days and record the results. Creating real-time student reflections, data, and action plans will help create the necessary foundation to truly engage on this everchanging issue.

Regardless, social media is going to remain a part of my class and perhaps receive a greater role. I cannot try to avoid what my students are doing in and outside of my class but as a teacher, I need to incorporate it if I want full engagement. As I grow and learn more ways to utilize social media in my class so will my student's ability to plug in and enjoy the academic world of social media.
